Live Music Capital – Austin officially became the Live Music Capital of the World in 1991, when it was determined that Austin has more live music venues per capita than anywhere else, at least in the U.S. There are around 200 active music venues operating in Austin today. That number goes up exponentially this weekend as the Austin City Limits Music Festival hits town with over 100 bands and performers.
Going Batty – Austin is the home to the largest urban bat population in North America. Yep, 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats hangout in Austin every year from March through October. There are only a few more weeks to witness the nightly exodus of bats from the Congress Avenue Bridge, as they make their nocturnal rounds.
Growing Population - The population of Austin (757,688) is larger than the population of Boston (near 590,000). Surprising, isn’t it? According to the Austin Business Journal, Austin is in the top ten cities for population growth between 2000 and 2009.
Low Unemployment – The unemployment rate in Austin stands at about 7.2 percent, as the city’s employers continue to add jobs. That is significantly lower than the nation’s 9.5 percent and the state’s unemployment rate of 8.4 percent.
Miles of Green – Austin has 220 parks and over 20 public golf courses within the city’s 232 square miles. So, get out there and enjoy!
