Austin’s South Congress Avenue
South Congress Avenue is an iconic Austin street that truly encapsulates the best qualities of this city. On one end is the Capitol, with its beautiful grounds and hallowed halls. On the other end is the area that has become known in recent years as SoCo. SoCo is hip, trendy, quirky Austin at its best. It’s also urban reinvention at its best.
At one point, the area of South Congress between Riverside and Ben White was better known for its less reputable aspects than its coffee shops and boutiques. There was a time when the best known resident of South Congress Avenue was a throng-wearing gentleman by the name of Leslie. Times have certainly changed as SoCo has become a hot spot for both tourists and residents of this great city.
There are still aspects of this section of town that retain their funky Austin personality, like Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds and the Continental Club. But there are also shiny new examples of quirky Austin, like Jo’s Coffee, Amy’s Ice Cream and Doc’s Motorworks.
First Thursday on South Congress
First Thursdays is a weekly SoCo event where stores stay open late and live music fills the street. This is a family friendly event on South Congress sponsored by the tightly knit association of merchants. It’s great people watching and a chance to browse the goods put out in front of the stores that might seem a little intimidating to the average shopper, like Uncommon Objects.
Only in Austin
As you walk along browsing the shops or eating at the great restaurants in SoCo, you can’t help looking up and seeing the Capitol building in the distance. This is an only-in-Austin moment as you pause to take in the splendor of this pink granite building. Then, you go have amazing tacos at Guerro’s with a killer margarita. Of course, you have to top that off with a cupcake from Hey Cupcake!
