Austin Things to Do: Ideas for Thanksgiving in Austin

Thanksgiving in Austin

Thanksgiving in Austin is the perfect holiday, for it’s all about family, food and football.  Thanksgiving traditions are also part of what makes this a special day, whether it’s Grandma’s special stuffing recipe or cheering on UT versus A&M with your belly full of turkey.  However, sometimes it’s nice to try something new:

How about a twist on the traditional pumpkin pie? Try this recipe for Pumpkin Mascarpone Pie:

Ingredients: 1 single pie crust; 1 – 8 oz. package of mascarpone or cream cheese, softened; 1 slightly beaten egg yolk; 2 tlbs honey; 1/2 tsp vanilla; 1 cup canned pumpkin; 1 – 5 oz. can evaporated milk; 2 slightly beaten eggs; 1/3 cup packed brown sugar; 1 tsp cinnamon; 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg

  1. Prepare pie crust in a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. In a bowl, beat mascarpone or cream cheese, egg yolk, honey and vanilla on low speed until smooth.  Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, stir together pumpkin, evaporated milk, 2 eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.  Pour pumpkin mixture into pie crust.  Dollop the mascarpone mixture over the pumpkin mixture.  Pull a knife gently through dollops to swirl fillings.
  4. Bake for 50 minutes or until top is puffed and knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool for 1 hour and then chill for 2 hours before serving to your very impressed guests. (recipe from Better Homes and Gardens 10/01)

Thanksgiving in Austin Tradition: UT vs. A&M

Had enough turkey (or enough family togetherness)? Thanksgiving in Austin would not be complete without the annual UT vs. A&M rivalry game. Head to Red’s Porch (3508 S.
