Finding a home often has a lot to do with finding good schools. Austin is a highly educated city with a remarkable 40 percent of the population holding college degrees and we hold our schools to high standards. The Austin Independent School District is comprised of 124 schools, with 24 of those being exemplary and 30 being recognized. There are 17 charter schools in the Austin ISD, including an exemplary high school and middle school.
University of Texas Makes Austin Proud
There is the University of Texas, which recently was ranked number 14 on the list of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance’s list of the 100 Best Values in Public Colleges for 2011. Plus, there are 67 four-year universities in a 200 mile radius.
UT certainly gives Austin plenty of clout and an abundance of sports to cheer and jeer (ESPN is developing its first 24 hour channel dedicated solely to the sports of one university and that would be the illustrious University of Texas). However, it’s the elementary and secondary schools that often determine which house someone will buy.
Eanes School District is Sought After
For example, Westlake is coveted real estate because it is in the Eanes school district, where all nine schools are rated exemplary. Westlake High School is not only a Blue Ribbon School, but is also continually ranked highly in Newsweek’s annual poll of the top U.S. high schools (58th in 2010).
Often people choose a neighborhood to be near a private school and Austin offers a number of quality private schools. In fact, southwest Austin boasts many highly rated private schools, including St. Andrews Episcopal(upper school), St, Michaels Catholic, St. Stephens Episcopal, St. Gabriels Catholic and Regents.
