Travis Country: One of Austin’s Best Kept Secrets

This is a great southwest Austin neighborhood that is easy to miss.  Hidden in the trees above the Barton Creek Greenbelt, Travis Country is a quiet little place where Mopac meets Southwest Parkway. Cars zooming west on Southwest Parkway go past the sign bearing the image of the Alamo hero William Barrett Travis on the edge of Republic of Texas Drive and don’t realize they going right by one of the best kept secrets in Austin.

Tree-Lined Streets and Shady Yards

Along the tree-lined streets and shady yards of Travis Country Circle you will see families ride by on bikes or kids of all ages playing in yards or swinging on ropes from the strong branches of the towering Live Oaks.   The home building started in the early 1970s and continued through the early 2000s, creating a unique blend of home styles.

Home Prices in Travis Country

House prices in this Austin neighborhood generally range from the upper-200s to the mid-400s.  There are modest two bedroom homes all the way to newer five bedroom homes.  Although many of the interiors have been remodeled over the years, the homes in the original section of Travis Country still retain their charm with serene courtyards at the entrances and attractive stonework.  

Travis Country’s Recreational Activities

You won’t find any stores or restaurants in the neighborhood, but there are two parks with pools, tennis courts, basketball courts and playgrounds.  Walking trails are located throughout the neighborhood, offering great places for exploration with children, dogs or bikes. Travis Country is connected to the Barton Creek Greenbelt.  A full day of hiking from the neighborhood through the greenbelt can take you all the way to Zilker Park. 

Travis Country Schools

It is easy to get involved and stay connected in Travis Country with the monthly newsletter, swim teams, tennis lessons and regular social events. Oak Hill Elementary is just a short drive away and was recently named an exemplary school.  Students from the neighborhood also attend O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School.  It is close to many private schools including the Regents School, which is located along the western edge of the neighborhood, and St. Andrews Upper School.

Conveniently Located near Central Austin

Travis Country is conveniently located near to downtown, the Hill Country, restaurants and shopping.  It is a great place to start a family, raise kids or even retire.  It’s one of those secrets you can’t help but share.
